“Will it work under my trees?” is one of the most common questions about wire-free robot mowers, and one of the hardest to answer honestly from published specifications.
Here is what can be said with confidence, and where the honest answer is that nobody publishes enough to compare.
Why tree cover matters at all
Satellite positioning works by receiving signals from satellites overhead. Anything substantial between the receiver and the sky — dense canopy, a roof overhang, a tall wall — can reduce how many satellites are usable and degrade the resulting fix.
This is a property of satellite positioning generally, not a flaw in any particular product. It is also why the same yard can be straightforward for a wire-based mower and awkward for a satellite-guided one.
Two things follow:
- It applies to the mower as it moves around under the canopy, and to any reference antenna the system requires, which is why manufacturers generally advise siting that hardware with a clear sky view.
- It does not apply in the same way to systems that lean more heavily on cameras or LiDAR, which are limited by other conditions instead.

The models that avoid the question entirely are the ones that define their boundary physically: Husqvarna Automower 415X and Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD. A buried wire does not care what is overhead.
What manufacturers say about weak signal
Several manufacturers describe their systems as combining satellite positioning with onboard vision specifically so the mower can keep working where reception is poor. Those are the manufacturers’ own descriptions, recorded with their sources:
Treat these as claims about design intent rather than measured performance. They tell you what a system is meant to do; they do not tell you how well it does it in a specific yard.
What we will not tell you
We will not rank these systems for tree cover, and we will not tell you that one brand’s approach handles shade better than another’s.
No manufacturer in our dataset publishes anything that would support such a comparison — no minimum satellite count, no tolerated canopy density, no signal quality threshold. Comparing them would mean inventing a specification, which is exactly what this site exists not to do.
This is also why the selector does not ask about tree cover. It asks only about things we can check against verified data.
Practical steps if your yard is shaded
Look at where the reference hardware would go, not just where the mower will run. A clear sky view for the antenna is often achievable even when the lawn itself is shaded — see do you need an antenna or reference station.
Consider a wire-based installation for heavily enclosed yards. It is more work up front and removes the question altogether. Several models support either approach, though supporting both does not automatically mean they can be combined in one installation — check the manual for the model concerned.
Ask the seller directly about your specific conditions, and ask what happens when the fix degrades. That is a manufacturer question, and a reasonable one to put before ordering.
