Two numbers appear on nearly every robot mower spec sheet: how long it runs on a charge, and how long it takes to charge again. They are useful. They are also routinely turned into conclusions they cannot support.

What the two numbers are

Runtime is how long the mower cuts on a full charge. Manufacturers usually publish this as a typical or maximum figure.

Charge time is how long it takes to refill the battery. A mower that charges quickly spends more of the day available, which is why a short charge time can matter as much as a long runtime.

Robot mowers are designed to cut little and often, returning to the dock on their own. Neither figure is a target you need to plan your day around.

The calculation we deliberately do not do

It is tempting to combine runtime, charge time, and cutting width into an estimate of area covered per day, and to rank mowers on the result.

We do not, for a straightforward reason: it would be a specification nobody published. Runtime is measured under conditions manufacturers describe only loosely. Cutting width does not translate directly into ground covered, because mowers overlap passes, navigate obstacles, and return to dock. Multiplying these figures together produces a confident-looking number built on assumptions we would be making up.

Where a manufacturer publishes a throughput figure of its own — an area-per-day or area-per-cycle claim — that belongs to the manufacturer and is recorded against the model with its source. What we will not do is derive one ourselves and present it as comparable across brands.

How much this should influence your decision

Less than it might seem, for most yards.

For a lawn comfortably within a model’s published coverage rating, runtime is largely a background detail — the mower manages its own schedule. Runtime and charge time become more interesting as your lawn approaches the top of a model’s stated coverage, or where mowing windows are constrained, for example by noise rules or shared access.
